| ARTIST STATEMENT | ||
|
In my latest collection titled Cool Perennials, I use mixed media (drawing, paint and transparent beeswax) on panel to emphasize color and movement in layered, shape-oriented compositions. I am energized by bright colors and organic shapes that appear to grow, converge, connect, or float in space. I like my work to hover between the abstract and the representational, the natural, and the artificial. Colors, structures and patterns inherent to plants provide me with endless sources of inspiration. I appreciate the varied hues and loose complexity seen in a grouping of leafy plants. Chartreuse ferns, dense succulents and explosive peonies are my current obsession because of their hearty, sensual, and occasionally delicate repetitive forms. In addition, saturated color enhanced by spring, early summer and fall sunlight give me a visual dose of intensity which seems new after winter. Finally, pattern swims into my work from my fascination with European folk art motifs, such as art lace, architectural details, and ornamental stitching. I have a deep fascination with luxurious indulgence, and my work is the embodiment of what I like to imagine, look at, and experience, whether it manifests itself in color, shape, taste, or form. I aspire to translate these decadent and whimsical qualities into my own work. |
